Swami Sivananda, also known as Sivananda Saraswati, was born on 8 September 1887 in Pattamdai. He was a spiritual guru, as well as a staunch supporter of yoga and Vedanta. He was a physician in his early life after which he retired and spent most of his life in Rishikesh.

He founded the “Divine Life Society” in 1936, followed by the Yoga Forest Academy in 1948. He has authored 296 books on various topics. Even today, Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center is run in the country and abroad by “Divine Life Society”.

In his ashram, knowledge, and practice of four types of yoga (Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Jnana Yoga, Rāja Yoga) are imparted and practiced.

Swami Sivananda died, known as entering “Mahasamadhi” on 14 July 1963 in his Ashram(Sivanandanagar).
